The UK and US have established a landmark bilateral deal that will maintain zero duties on British pharmaceutical exports entering the American market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has committed to raise expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the NHS. This pledge guarantees that import taxes on these key exports will stay at nothing for a period of the next three years.

This development follows earlier threats to significantly raise tariffs on patented drug imports, with potential rates discussed reaching one hundred percent.

"This arrangement between the Britain bolsters the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and brings much-needed equity to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a statement declared.

Economic Significance

Medicines represent one of the Britain's biggest goods shipped to the US, which is easily the largest buyer for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Export figures reveal that in the 12 months to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped drugs worth £11.1bn to the US. This value represented a significant portion of British export trade in that span.

"This guarantee secures employment, stimulates investment and sets the stage for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for medical research," a government official remarked.

Detailed NHS Changes

The deal includes several notable commitments from the United Kingdom:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it judges new medicines to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to double total health service expenditure on treatments from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage pharmaceutical firms must return to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Last year, refunds topped twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact comes amid a long-running dispute between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by claims that US customers were paying significantly more for the same drugs than consumers in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been paused or cancelled, while substantial expansions have been pledged toward US facilities.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS needed to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the last ten years.
